Abstract

At a time defined by overwhelm, division and uncertainty, leaders face complex challenges shaped by rapid technological, political, social and ecological change. As a result, many feel exhausted and anxious and struggle to stay connected to themselves and their teams. This chapter explores the importance of compassion as a powerful leadership skill to help navigate the overwhelm. The author shares insights from her clinical experience with leaders who excel professionally and yet can feel depleted and alone. She reflects on her personal experiences of tragedy and the growth that shaped her work as a psychologist. Integrating therapeutic concepts into practical leadership strategies, the author introduces Fierce Compassion , blending courage, wisdom and care. Through interviews with leaders from diverse fields, this book highlights real-world applications of compassion for organisational culture, psychological safety, team dynamics and individual wellbeing. This chapter is a call to action for leaders to embrace Fierce Compassion as a guiding principle for facing complexity to help foster resilience, empathy and connection.
