Cultivating compassionate capacity
Abstract
In a high-pressure world that often rewards speed rather than reflection, cultivating compassion is a radical and necessary leadership skill. This chapter introduces a practical method, the NEW reflective learning cycle ( Notice, Empathise, Wise Action ), for developing the capacity for compassion in leadership contexts. This chapter reframes compassion as an active, trainable skill, rather than a mere passive feeling. Using psychological research, it explores how mindfulness, self-awareness and emotional literacy help leaders become more agile in their responses. The NEW model supports leaders to pause, reflect and choose action that is both courageous and caring. With practical tools and reflective prompts, it helps leaders shift from intention to action. This chapter provides the foundational skills for the second half of this book, where compassion is a dynamic, ongoing practice that can help leaders stay grounded in their purpose and values.
