Abstract

In today’s high-performance culture, leaders can end up overworking in order to achieve. This chapter challenges the myth that working harder inevitably leads to better outcomes and explores the impact of overworking on wellbeing and performance. The author highlights how the internalised pressure to achieve can lead to chronic stress, burnout and reduced effectiveness. Beneath the polished exterior of the high-functioning achiever, overdrive can slowly deplete energy, dull creativity and leave leaders disconnected from themselves and their teams. This chapter reframes success through the lens of Fierce Compassion . Leaders are invited to pause and reflect on what happens when there isn’t any more room to work harder. By engaging the NEW reflective cycle ( Notice, Empathise, Wise Action ) leaders learn to shift from compulsive striving to values-driven, sustainable effort. In doing so, they protect their own wellbeing and become role models for a healthier, more human-centred form of leadership.
