Abstract

Many leaders are perfectionists, and perfectionism can be seen as the “good” flaw. But there are hidden costs to perfectionism, including an undermining of creativity, relationships and self-esteem. This chapter explores how perfectionism affects leaders, whether from relentless self-criticism or the impossible standards they place on others or themselves. While leaders may appear high-performing, they may be struggling under unrealistic expectations. The author explores the research on difficulties associated with perfectionism, and through interviews with leaders shows the benefits of a compassionate approach. Fierce Compassion offers an alternative practice to notice these patterns, empathise with their origins and take Wise Action. This chapter reframes high expectations to instead focus on values, flexibility and human connection. By engaging self-awareness, emotional courage and realistic goal-setting, leaders free themselves from the tyranny of perfectionism.
