Abstract

Supporting others is a central part of leadership, and often comes with emotional complexity. Some leaders over-function, rescuing or overextending themselves at the expense of their own wellbeing. Others, worn down or unsure how to help, may withdraw or default to a more punitive, task-focused stance. Habits at each end of the spectrum can erode trust, connection and sustainable leadership. This chapter explores how Fierce Compassion offers a balanced alternative. The NEW reflective cycle ( Notice , Empathise , Wise Action ) helps leaders recognise their stress patterns and tendencies. Drawing on frameworks such as Karpman’s Triangle, this chapter introduces alternative compassionate roles that support others’ growth without reinforcing dependency or disengagement. Rather than suggesting leaders fix everyone’s problems, this chapter reframes support as a relational, co-regulated process that benefits from clear boundaries and emotional presence. With Fierce Compassion , leaders can respond with both care and clarity, helping foster cultures of psychological safety, mutual respect and shared responsibility.
