Abstract

Conflict is inevitable in leadership, yet many leaders struggle by avoiding it, inflaming it or softening their message so much that it’s ineffective. This chapter explores how Fierce Compassion helps leaders navigate difficult conversations with clarity, courage and care. Using the NEW reflective learning cycle ( Notice, Empathise, Wise Action ), this chapter guides readers to Notice their reactivity and internal narratives, Empathise with themselves and others, and take Wise Action that honours autonomy, accountability and connection. Tools drawn from Self-Determination Theory, Compassion-Focused Therapy and coaching practice help leaders regulate emotion, prepare skilfully and frame feedback in ways that reduce defensiveness and increase collaboration. When approached with Fierce Compassion , conflict becomes an opportunity to clarify values, strengthen relationships and model respectful engagement. This chapter provides both mindset shifts and practical tools to support leaders in having conversations that matter.
