Abstract

Whether we pay attention to it or not, we’re surrounded by persuasion. It’s in what we scroll past, click on, overhear, or are asked to sign. Every day, messages vie for our attention, seek our trust, shape what we think, or guide what we do. These efforts come in many forms: through words, images, design, and behavior. Some are obvious, like a political ad or a debate. Others are built into how a form is laid out, how a headline is worded, or how a story is told. Most of the time, persuasion doesn’t announce itself, so it’s up to us to recognize and respond to it appropriately.
