Rhetoric of Places and Spaces
Abstract
This chapter explores the rhetoric of places and spaces, examining how physical environments influence behavior, identity, and cultural meaning. Through examples such as coffee shops, cathedrals, courtrooms, and cemeteries, it analyzes how design, usage, language, and media shape our understanding of who belongs and what actions are appropriate in a space. It introduces concepts such as affordances, public versus private space, and the role of history and mythology in constructing place identity. Drawing on case studies and cultural analysis, the chapter reveals how spaces communicate messages and influence human experiences.
