Abstract

This chapter examines news as a rhetorical construction rather than a neutral reflection of reality. It explores how language, framing, and media structures influence what stories are told, how they are presented, and how audiences interpret them. Topics include the blurred lines between news and entertainment, the illusion of objectivity, and the role of economic pressures, ownership, and algorithms in shaping coverage. Students are encouraged to consider the persuasive power of headlines, story placement, and emotional appeals while developing strategies to become more critical, informed news consumers in today’s fast-moving, polarized media landscape.
