Abstract

This chapter explores the rhetoric of health, examining how language, culture, and media shape our understanding and experiences of healthcare. It highlights how media portrayals often promote narrow ideals of physical health, while cultural norms influence healthcare delivery and access. This chapter also delves into mental health, discussing the evolution of language surrounding it and the impact of insurance policies on care. It emphasizes that communication failures in healthcare can have serious consequences, especially for marginalized communities, and that storytelling can empower patients and promote a more human-centered approach. Ultimately, this chapter advocates for critical media literacy and the amplification of patient voices to foster a more inclusive and effective healthcare system.
