Abstract

This chapter explores how language shapes perception, identity, and power in everyday life. It examines rhetorical tools such as framing, euphemism, jargon, signaling, and labeling to reveal how word choices influence what we notice, how we feel, and what we believe. Through examples from media, policy, and professional communication, the chapter shows how language can include or exclude, clarify or manipulate, empower or marginalize. Key concepts include emotive meaning, the rhetoric of deservedness, virtue signaling, and logical fallacies. Readers are invited to reflect on their own language choices and to consider the ethical implications of how meaning is constructed and conveyed.
