Abstract

This chapter delves into a range of practices to support good writing. Beginning with an overview of what makes good writing, the chapter emphasises that writing is a skill that takes time to learn and a good dissertation will require multiple iterations and redrafting. To support effective writing, students are encouraged to ‘read to write’ in order to support their own writing and given advice on how to develop their own voice while prioritising a core ‘red thread’ to their argument. This process then links to ensuring writing is effective by focussing on simple and straightforward writing styles and mechanisms to support effective chapter, paragraph, and sentence construction. Attention is paid to writing in an active voice and various further strategies (with practice examples) to realise this.
