Integrated Arts Education
Abstract
This chapter explores the theory, practice, and future potential of arts integration and integrated arts in primary education. It begins by defining key concepts and distinctions between arts integration, where the arts support and deepen learning in other subjects, and integrated arts, which focus on interconnections within the arts disciplines themselves. Drawing on current research and classroom-based examples, the chapter illustrates how co-equal and transdisciplinary approaches can enrich both artistic and academic learning, foster creativity, and support cognitive, emotional, and social development. It highlights signature pedagogies such as Studio Thinking, Artistic Inquiry, and Choice-Based Art Education, and showcases the role of partnerships between teachers, artists, and cultural institutions in enabling meaningful integration. The chapter also examines challenges to implementation, including curriculum overload, limited teacher training, and assessment complexities. Emphasising the need for whole-school support and sustained professional development, it argues for a shift away from superficial or instrumental uses of the arts toward deeper, conceptually grounded integration. Looking forward, it recommends further research into teacher education, interdisciplinary assessment, and school-wide approaches to embedding the arts. By supporting teachers as creative professionals, arts integration can become a powerful force in transforming learning and enriching the educational experience for all students.
