Abstract

Accurate and appropriate assessment provides teachers with the information they need to make better decisions about how to best support their learners. Achieving this can involve a wide array of approaches. However, assessment in the context of curriculum integration is particularly challenging. This is largely due to the breadth of subject areas and disciplines that must be considered simultaneously. Unlike traditional subject-specific teaching, it is difficult to fully capture exactly what has been learned, how it was learned, and how best to measure it. To understand why this is the case, an examination of some of the foundational ideas of classroom assessment will first be undertaken, followed by a brief summary of six different assessment approaches. Their application in an integrated context will also be discussed before considering future directions for practice.
