Abstract

The introductory chapter argues that children are vital to storytelling in cinema and television. While recognising the historical challenges faced by child actors, including exploitation and trauma, it advocates for a responsible approach that prioritises their well-being. By examining best practices from content creators, the book aims to shift the discourse toward creating safe and empowering environments where young performers can thrive. This chapter lays the groundwork for a detailed exploration of the logistical and legal requirements for incorporating child actors into film and television projects, along with practical, playful, and secure methodologies for engaging with them throughout the production process.
