Abstract

Middle childhood is a developmental stage defined by significant cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Chapter 9 analyses casting strategies for this age group, comparing Stranger Things and The Florida Project , and highlights the need to assess children’s capacity for self-expression and imaginative role-playing, as well as interpersonal chemistry among young performers. The authors discuss rehearsal techniques, such as physical activities and leveraging the concept of the “paracosm” – an imagined world. They offer several directing methods, including tapping into children’s problem-solving skills and guiding them into their roles. The chapter also provides troubleshooting strategies to address common challenges in directing this age group.
