Abstract

The casting of projects involving children requires the utmost care. Chapter 2 details options such as casting studios, casting directors, grassroots scouting, and self-tapes. It emphasises the necessity of casting a wide net, ensuring clear communication, and creating opportunities for neurodiverse and disabled children. The chapter recommends creating a child-friendly audition environment and offers techniques for both prepared and improvised scenes. Filmmakers are encouraged to remain open to diverse interpretations of characters and fresh talent, and to evaluate the nature of a child’s home support. Additionally, the chapter addresses the significance of callback auditions and key considerations for making final casting decisions.
