Abstract

Chapter 8 focuses on early childhood, a time of rapid neural development and vibrant imagination, where children’s curiosity and love for dramatic play make them ideal collaborators in screen storytelling. It presents casting and directing techniques tailored to their short attention spans, emphasising storytelling, make-believe, and allowing children to simply be, rather than micromanaging their every action. Drawing on films like Beasts of the Southern Wild and Lion , this chapter provides practical strategies – such as playful tasks, blocking scenes as games, and call-and-response techniques – to build trust and capture authentic, captivating performances on camera. Additionally, it offers troubleshooting tips for navigating the inevitable challenges.
