Introduction
Abstract
This introduction examines the tensions surrounding Taiwan and the contested nature of the “Taiwan issue.” It highlights Taiwan&s;s significance in global politics, showing why its future is critical for regional stability, the global economy, and the rules-based international order. The introduction reviews Taiwan&s;s international status, shaped by the legacy of the Chinese Civil War, the broad though not universal shift in diplomatic recognition from the Republic of China to the People&s;s Republic of China, and the persistence of unofficial ties that enable Taiwan to maintain international engagement despite Beijing&s;s opposition. It also considers Taiwan&s;s historical trajectory, emphasizing how its political and social development have diverged from mainland China and fostered a distinct identity. By situating Taiwan within these historical, political, and strategic contexts, the introduction clarifies what is at stake in the Taiwan issue and provides a basis for understanding how international actors perceive and respond to rising cross-strait tensions in the chapters that follow.
