Abstract

Over the past twenty years, many new theoretical approaches to crime and its control have been advanced by sociologists. One of the problems consistently raised – though usually abandoned – concerns the need to formulate a social theory of deviance that will integrate the many established theories that have been published over the past decade… Though Lockwood (1956) long ago admonished us to synthesize the strengths of several disciplines, too many of us cling to the specialist approach to research into deviance. This has erected barriers against understanding the concept of crime in all its complexities. Endless and painstaking efforts are channeled into discussions of… bifurcated paradigms… By its very nature the paradigm approach to the analysis of crime fails to provide a large context for its study and therefore limits the “sociological imagination. ” 2
