Abstract

What is supply chain and logistics analytics, why is it so important, and where and how is it used in supply chain management? In this book, we address these questions and provide a broad overview of concepts, techniques, and methodologies utilized in real-world supply chain planning and analysis. Using easy-to-understand examples, and step-by-step instructions and formulas, we explain and illustrate a diverse set of practical methods used to support all operations across a supply chain ranging from the procurement of raw materials to the delivery of finished goods to customers. We discuss why a strong supply chain and logistics analytics organizational capability has become essential for a firm to operate a successful supply chain and business. Additionally, we describe the need for, and present examples of, supply chain and logistics analytics decision support at all planning and operations levels from the long-run strategic, to the medium-term tactical, to the short-run operational. This chapter sets the stage for this book by introducing the subject of supply chain and logistics analytics, and the planning levels and time horizons that this field addresses. The chapter then reviews the organization of the book, its contents, and its objectives.
