Abstract

This chapter explores retreats and institutes as immersive faculty development experiences that allow for deep engagement. It contrasts the shorter, intensive model of retreats with the more extended and structured approach of institutes, analyzing how each format contributes to faculty learning. The chapter discusses key design considerations, and integration of assessment without ignoring the importance of environment in shaping outcomes. By situating retreats and institutes within the broader portfolio of faculty development programming, the authors argue that these formats provide unique opportunities for transformation and long-term impact.
