Self-Directed Learning
Abstract
Mid-career teachers possess a well-developed set of teaching skills yet remain curious and interested in professional growth. Self-directed learning empowers teachers to make decisions about the content and trajectory of their professional learning. This chapter discusses attributes of self-directed learning and how these relate to the teacher-friend mentoring approach. It describes how to find a teacher-friend, engage in mutually beneficial mentoring, and reverse mentoring. The chapter also explains self-mentoring, helpful strategies, and the metaphorical gear that supports self-directed learning.
