Abstract

The introduction of GenAI has forced educators to reevaluate their approach to assessment, challenging long-held assumptions around our understanding of how we know someone has truly learned something. This chapter explores the intersection of AI and assessment, looking back across historical assessment trends, how existing methods further exacerbate inequities in education and fail to take into account critical skills such as teamwork, cultural competencies, and critical thinking. This work is guided by the following questions: 1) What do we truly value about the process of learning? 2) How might we reimagine the ways we define and assess learning to challenge systemic inequities? and 3) What is our desired future for assessment and how do we get there? I propose a process for reimagining our approach to assessment using the SHIFT framework (Systemic Holistic Innovation for Feminist Transformation), which integrates my understandings of critical reflection, gender lens, design thinking, human-centered design, design justice, futures literacy, and feminist leadership. I believe by embracing the SHIFT framework, we can create assessment practices that nurture human potential, foster care, and promote equity within our classrooms, our communities, and our world.
