The Myth of Neutrality
Abstract
Analysis of high-profile AI failures such as Google’s Gemini image generator and Twitter’s photo-cropping algorithm shows that human psychological defenses infiltrate every stage of AI development. Technical systems become repositories for human psychological shadows, often invisibly perpetuating and amplifying societal prejudices. When AI systems generate historically impossible images or systematically favor certain facial features, they reveal splitting, denial, and projection at work. Bringing psychoanalytic insights into dialogue with AI development can mitigate the unconscious biases that plague artificial intelligence systems.
