Abstract

As artificial intelligence increasingly mimics human consciousness, we face a provocative question: can machines truly understand our minds? Chapter 4 examines how AI systems attempt to replicate human Theory of Mind—our ability to interpret others’ mental states—and the unsettling implications when they succeed. Through analysis of real-world cases, from chatbots to AI companions, we explore how these systems absorb and reflect human psychological patterns. Psychoanalytic frameworks reveal how AI both mirrors and shapes human cognition, creating unprecedented forms of algorithmic intimacy that blur the boundaries between human and machine consciousness. The result is a complex dance of projection and reflection that challenges our understanding of artificial and human intelligence.
