Abstract

This chapter explores the correlation between socioeconomic status and early child development. It considers how living in poverty may not only restrict children&s;s access to nutritious food, adequate housing and resources, but may also shape their neurological development. Research into the impact of parenting styles is reviewed in order to establish how best parents and practitioners can support children in these circumstances and understand why optimal parenting performance may be difficult to achieve, through consideration of the complex structural challenges that families navigate.
