Abstract

In this chapter, children learn about safety, trust, and social behavior from the world around them. The idea of “stranger danger” points to real risks, but these are often overstated. Most of what shapes a child’s view comes from three main places: family, school, and media. At home, kids pick up values and behaviors by watching and practicing. In school, they learn how to get along with others and understand social rules. Media and technology also play a big role, shaping how children see the world and sometimes passing along biases, including those found in artificial intelligence. All these influences work together to shape how children see safety, relationships, and the world.
