Stratify
Abstract
The third chapter, Stratify , situates architecture as the act of materializing knowledge through the layered practices of making, detailing, and crafting. Stratification is both method and metaphor: it clarifies and structures the multitude of ideas embedded within a project while documenting the tangible and intangible traces of its becoming. In this sense, architecture broadens into a poly-discursive field, one that incorporates domains as diverse as light, sound, material flows, and the phenomenology of disappearing thresholds such as the vanishing window. For Mathew and Ghosh, stratification is inseparable from craft. The detail does not ornament but enables its legibility, giving voice to conceptual intent through material practice. The flows of concrete, the labor of hands, the migration of skills, and the cultural memory sedimented in each fragment are neither arbitrary nor incidental. Instead, they form a collective archive of knowledge shared between nature and humanity, between memory and futurity. Stratification thus becomes a form of rigorous cultural inscription, each layer inflecting, refracting, and sometimes resisting the architectural object’s existence in its social and ecological contexts. This chapter reads stratification as a tactical map: an immersive interpretive framework that unfolds across material, temporal, and social strata. It underscores how architecture navigates between excavation of the primal and accretion of meaning, culminating in stratification as the clarifying act that brings coherence to complexity. Here, Mathew and Ghosh’s practice demonstrates that the making , through reservation or exuberance, through the choreographies of labor and the subtleties of detail as the means by which architecture holds together the fragile threads of past and present, place and people, memory and future, which documentations create a body of knowledge about this moment of time in space and place.
