Abstract

This chapter introduces the Portbridge Day Labor Center (DLC), a grassroots collective of day laborers in Southern California that has become a cornerstone of collaboration and community building in Portbridge. Characterized by daily interactions among workers seeking employment and broader exchanges with community members, the DLC reflects both the challenges and possibilities of migrant life. While migrant workers are vulnerable to many challenges, such as wage theft, harsh conditions, and structural barriers tied to immigration status, they also demonstrate flexibility and agency that broaden anthropological theories of migration and labor. Recognizing the critical role day laborers play in the informal economy, this opening chapter captures the spirited quality of the DLC and argues that dynamic local citizenship, as demonstrated by the DLC in Portbridge, serves as an example of how embodying flexible forms of belonging can benefit migrants, employers, and community members.
