“Zona Jorneleros ”
Abstract
This chapter situates the Portbridge Day Labor Center (DLC) within broader scholarship on migrant labor, focusing on the characteristics of day laborers and the unique qualities that came to define the Center. Established by the City of Portbridge and under the purview of the Portbridge Police Department, the DLC provided a model for how collaboration among local authorities, im/migrants, and community members could create an organized hiring site. While migrant day laborers typically compete for jobs at informal, temporary, and often crowded locations, the Portbridge DLC organized job distribution, employed a leadership structure, and was self-regulated. These characteristics made it a desirable place to secure employment, encouraging workers to return regularly and allowing for consistent observation over an extended period of time, a unique aspect of this research. Through descriptions of the sights, sounds, and daily activities of the Center, this chapter brings the DLC to life, capturing the unpredictability that shaped each day. Utilizing anthropological research methods, it also highlights how workers were eager to share their experiences while pointing to the broader issues surrounding immigration as a subject of social debate.
