Interpretation in Sigmund Freud's Writings
Abstract
This chapter examines Freud’s evolving conception of interpretation from its origins as dream-decoding to a complex understanding of the interplay between unconscious content, resistance, and transference. Freud’s method progresses from an archaeological excavation of repressed wishes to a structural analysis of psychic defenses, ultimately seeing interpretation as a nuanced negotiation with the patient’s ego and the therapeutic relationship.
