Interpretation in Heinz Kohut's Self Psychology
Abstract
Heinz Kohut’s contribution is summarized as a paradigm shift from interpretive mastery toward empathic immersion and selfobject function. This chapter elucidates how Kohut’s emphasis on empathy, optimal frustration, and transmuting internalization recasts interpretation as a relational event nurturing disrupted self-development. Interpretation’s power is seen less in explanation and more in recognition, witnessing, and co-creation of meaning.
