“She was labouring in a rain barrel when we arrived!”
Abstract
This chapter explores how newly qualified midwives are shaped by moments of wonder, surprise, and resonance that arise unexpectedly in practice. These vivid, often emotional experiences, such as a birth in a rain barrel, witnessing calm under pressure, or rethinking risk, profoundly influence professional identity. Drawing on Waldenfel’s concept of responsivity , this chapter shows how such moments invite reflection and shift perception. Rather than stemming from mastery, growth here emerges through openness and attunement to the unexpected. These stories illustrate how being moved becomes central to midwifery, expanding one’s capacity to relate, respond, and dwell meaningfully with others.
