Abstract

This chapter follows Olivia, a newly qualified midwife whose experience of silencing a woman’s disclosure during hospital training left her unsettled. Drawing on the allegories of Kairos and Metanoia, this chapter explores how moments of regret can catalyse transformation. Olivia’s subsequent work in a free-standing birth centre allowed her to practice with compassion and time, reimagining what meaningful care could be. Through her care for Jane, who was ultimately born by caesarean section, Olivia learned to value presence over outcome . This chapter explores how reflection, relational care, and moral emotions shape midwifery practice and support the transition from regret to professional growth.
