Abstract

This final chapter explores how newly qualified midwives develop relational presence as they transition from clinical training environments into free-standing birth centres. It highlights the importance of supportive mentorship, safe learning environments, and attunement to the embodied, emotional, and relational dimensions of care. Drawing on polyvagal theory and Heidegger’s concept of dwelling, this chapter illustrates how midwives cultivated confidence, professional identity, and the capacity to remain present. Through storytelling, reflective practice, and sensory engagement, midwives learned to perceive birth as relationally co-constructed. This chapter closes this book by affirming that relational care is possible across all birth settings, including hospitals.
