Abstract

This chapter explores the lived experiences of experienced midwives as they guide newly qualified midwives through their orientation in free-standing birth centres. Beyond technical skill acquisition, this chapter emphasises the importance of socialisation, communication, and attunement within a team. Trust and team cohesion emerge through verbal and non-verbal communication, especially in high-stakes situations, such as in emergencies. Experienced midwives recall moments of awe, attentiveness, and growth in their new colleagues as affirmations of their shared practice. Ultimately, this chapter portrays orientation as a transformative process that deepens both individual identity and team solidarity through embodied, relational care.
