Considering crisis and risk in psychoanalytic work with adolescents
Abstract
This chapter takes a bird’s-eye view of the notions of risk and crisis, looking at them historically and socioculturally. These terms and their meanings frame all clinical and cultural debates and considerations around working with adolescents in crisis, and so they need exploration and mapping out. The author looks at the concept of risk and how it has become a central aspect of mental health discourse in recent decades in Anglo-Saxon cultures; the ways we understand risk and crisis within the adolescent years; and how these terms and their assumed meanings seep into the consulting room for clinicians and young people alike.
