Composite Technologies
Abstract
This chapter builds upon the foundational understanding of elemental digital technologies discussed in Chapters 6 and 7 by shifting focus to Composite Technologies—advanced capabilities that emerge from the convergence of core digital functions such as computation, Data Management, instrumentation, and communication. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) exemplify how these foundational capabilities are integrated to deliver higher order, synergistic solutions that enable intelligent automation, cross-functional coordination, and adaptive business processes. Among these, packaged enterprise applications hold a particularly important place. Though they predate the Digital Era, their strategic relevance has been re-defined with the advent of the Cloud Platforms, AI integration, and real-time analytics. No longer limited to back-office functions, modern enterprise applications now act as dynamic platforms that support predictive insights, personalised experiences, and data-driven decision-making. This chapter explores how enterprise applications have become central to digital transformation efforts and how they contribute differentiated value in the AI-driven business landscape. The chapter also presents a structured framework for analysing Composite Technologies through the lens of digital taxonomy, offering a scalable approach for understanding both current and emerging technologies. This perspective can be extended to evaluate next-generation innovations such as robotics, agentic AI, and cyber–physical systems, which increasingly draw upon combinations of elemental capabilities to create complex, autonomous, and adaptive systems. While AI is introduced in this chapter as a Composite Technology, a more in-depth exploration of its foundations, paradigms, and business implications is presented in Chapter 9 .
