Abstract

Majuli, located in the northeastern region of India, is recognised as the world's largest inhabited riverine island and is distinguished as a carbon-neutral, biodiverse heritage site. Currently spanning approximately 580 km 2 , situated within the Brahmaputra River, the island supports a population of around 168,000 inhabitants. Over the past century, Majuli has experienced significant spatial reduction, with its area decreasing by nearly half from 1,200 km 2 to around 400 km 2 , due to a combination of rising flood levels, exacerbated by shifting climate regimes, and underlying morphotectonic processes. Majuli remains a site of profound cultural and historical significance, where local communities continue to demonstrate adaptive resilience in the face of ongoing environmental change.
