Appreciating Biocultural Heritage for Climate Action in an Arctic City
Abstract
Working in Arctic cities and visiting Indigenous Peoples on whose lands these cities are built, I face the same hard questions as I would at home. Is it sufficient to give land acknowledgement to continue urban development business as usual if the city is located on the lands of Indigenous Peoples? Is the word urbanization synonymous with the word colonization if all planning, design, construction, and maintenance of urban space is done by settlers? Are there any possibilities to honour, preserve, and support Indigenous ways of living on the land when the land is urbanized?
