Abstract

This chapter includes information about the development of international conventions and codes that support the management and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage. Festivals, traditional dancing, storytelling, market shopping, culinary appreciation may all be considered intangible cultural heritage and/or activities. A section has been included on Indigenous cultural knowledge holders and Indigenous rights-based tourism development with reference to UNDRIP United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 2007. If tangible heritage represents a community's hardware, intangible culture heritage (ICH) represents its software. This chapter explains some of the core concepts behind ICH and also some of its unique management challenges, especially for tourism.
