Strategy here, strategy there
Abstract
Many in Europe are worried that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is just the first step in Vladimir Putin’s territorial ambitions and that the next one will be an attack against a European country that is part of NATO. Based upon what is called the “authoritarian social contract,” this chapter examines the difficulties associated with a hypothetical Russian invasion of Europe. It argues that such a project would run the risk of altering what is at the heart of the bargain that ensures the stability of the regime and the loyalty of the Russian people toward their political leaders.
