Abstract

Chapter 10 explores the growing importance of options on Treasury futures as essential tools for managing interest rate risk in fixed income portfolios. This chapter describes how options on key Treasury futures contracts, such as the 2-Year, 5-Year, and 10-Year Notes, offer both calls and puts across weekly, monthly, and quarterly expiries, with a wide range of strike prices adaptable to different strategies. It explains the impact of implied volatility, the volatility smile, and skew, and introduces risk metrics such as gamma, vega, and theta, which define the nonlinear behavior of options positions. Real-world strategies are discussed for various investor types, including benchmark-sensitive managers, capital-efficient hedgers, and macro traders. The text emphasizes how options enable targeted hedging, enhance yield, and provide flexible response to changing market conditions.
