Abstract

Chapter 4 surveys the breadth of U.S. Treasury futures contracts and their vital role in managing interest rate risk across a wide range of maturities within the financial system. It explains how the diversity of contracts, from short-term Treasury bills (T-Bill) and 2-Year Note futures to long-duration Ultra Bond futures, allows market participants to hedge exposures and speculate on rates at different points on the yield curve. The chapter describes how shorter contracts react sharply to central bank decisions and economic data, while longer maturities reflect changing inflation expectations and fiscal concerns. Each contract’s design, delivery criteria, and individual market dynamics are outlined in detail. The chapter concludes by emphasizing how this deep and varied suite of instruments supports liquidity, precise curve management, and price transparency.
