Spreading Treasury futures to other markets
Abstract
Chapter 8 explores how Treasury futures can be spread against other financial markets to express macroeconomic views, manage risk, and capture relative value across the global fixed income landscape. The chapter details the foundational role of Treasuries in setting benchmarks for pricing instruments such as swaps, corporate bonds, and mortgage-backed securities (MBS) and shows how futures-based spread strategies allow efficient and transparent risk transfer and speculative positioning. It covers spread trading against secured overnight funding rate (SOFR) and Eris Swap Futures, credit and duration-hedged credit futures, and the use of to-be-announced (TBA) mortgage futures. Examples and case studies illustrate capital efficiency, margin offsets, and practical applications for various institutions, highlighting how modern futures products support flexible and precise cross-market hedging and investment strategies while promoting broader financial market integrity.
