Abstract

This chapter focuses on the process of coding qualitative data. Examples are from my research using grounded theory techniques to explore social support experiences among African American cancer survivors. Topics in this chapter include Data Management (labeling and storing interview data, managing transcripts) and Identifying Themes and Categories (coding strategies to generate tentative theory and to identify themes and categories). Discussions on Data Management and Identifying Themes and Categories include text, diagrams, and tables to illustrate how I developed a coding style relevant to my program of research.
