Abstract

This chapter outlines the reasons why social licence and the Blue Economy are important topics to consider, both separately and in combination. It explains the book’s methodology of applied moral philosophy and, in distinguishing it from the empirical social sciences, outlines its specific contribution to policymaking, stakeholder understanding, and social justification. It provides an overview of the chapters that make up the book’s two parts, beginning with Part 1 ’s conceptual and ethical analysis of the social licence to operate and then turning in Part 2 to a more practical focus on ethics and legitimacy in the Blue Economy.
