Abstract

This chapter explains the key ethical principles and values at work in the Blue Economy. It employs several different methodologies, including a systematic quantitative literature review (SQLR), multidimensional legitimacy analysis, and interview data on the lived experiences of Blue Economy practitioners and stakeholders to derive eight Blue Economy Ethical Principles: Environmental Protection, Stakeholder Participation, Fairness, Harm Prevention, Beneficence, Place Attachment, Integrity, and Care. It explores how these ethical principles interact in the context of the ‘Social Licence to Operate’ (SLO) and the ‘Cultural Licence to Operate’ (CLO).
