Abstract

This chapter introduces the central argument that journalistic professionalism and normative journalism practice are interdependent, particularly within UK higher education. The chapter contextualises the study within a rapidly evolving media landscape shaped by declining trust and the rise of social media. It also explores the theoretical underpinnings of professionalism and sets the stage for the participant interviews outlined later in the book, which undertake a critical examination of how professionalism is taught and understood in journalism education, especially in relation to ethics and normative practice.
